Reach for a repair when the damage is small, shallow, and out of your sightline: chips up to about a quarter and cracks under roughly six inches that haven't reached the edge. Reach for a replacement when it's long, deep, edge-reaching, or sitting in the driver's view — those compromise the glass's strength and can't be safely restored.
Why the driver's line of sight matters
Even a repairable-size chip gets replaced if it's directly in your view, because resin can leave slight distortion — fine at the edges, not fine in your eyeline. Edge cracks are the other automatic replacement: the perimeter carries the structural load, so damage there weakens the whole windshield.
