When a windshield has to be replaced rather than repaired

Plenty of damage that looks alarming is repairable, and we would rather repair yours than sell you glass. A replacement becomes necessary when:

• The crack is longer than a dollar bill. Beyond roughly six inches, resin cannot restore the structure reliably.
• It reaches the edge of the glass. Edge cracks compromise the bond to the frame and spread quickly.
• It sits in the driver's direct line of sight. Even a good repair leaves slight distortion, which is unacceptable directly ahead of the driver.
• Both laminate layers are broken, or there are multiple intersecting cracks.
• There is pitting across the whole surface from years of highway sand, which scatters oncoming headlights badly at night.

The windshield is structural, not a window

This is the part most people have never been told. Your windshield carries up to 45 percent of the cabin's structural integrity in a front-end collision and up to 60 percent in a rollover — it braces the roof against collapse. It is also what the passenger airbag deploys against; the bag inflates downward into the glass and is redirected toward the occupant. A poorly bonded windshield can let the airbag push it out of the frame entirely, at which point the airbag is doing nothing useful.

Which is why the urethane bond and the cure time are not paperwork. We use the correct adhesive for the conditions and hold you to the safe drive-away time — typically 30 to 60 minutes — before the vehicle goes back on the road. Anyone handing your keys back immediately is not doing this properly.

Camera recalibration is part of the job, not an upsell

If your vehicle has lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking or a lane-departure warning, it runs off a camera mounted to the windshield. Move that glass by even a fraction of a degree and the camera is aiming at the wrong point down the road, which means the system misjudges distances — and the failure is silent. Nothing on the dash tells you it is now wrong.

Recalibration is built into our replacement rather than sent elsewhere. Static calibration uses targets at measured distances; dynamic calibration requires a road drive at set speeds; many vehicles need both. We confirm which yours takes and complete it before handing the car back.

Matching the glass to your vehicle

Windshields are not interchangeable even within a model year. We match the acoustic interlayer if your vehicle has one, the solar or infrared coating, the shade band at the top, rain sensor and camera mounting brackets, heating elements in the wiper park area, and any heads-up display coating — HUD glass is specifically manufactured for it and ordinary glass produces a ghosted double image.
